Mortgage Consultant

Responsible for origination of first mortgage which includes: conducting initial pre-qualification interviews, preparing complete loan application packages and necessary documentation, communicating policies for extension of credit in accordance with Credit Union and secondary investor guidelines, meeting production expectations, and serving members, prospective members, builders, developers, and Realtors promptly and professionally. 

Essential Duties and Primary Responsibilities:

  • Travel throughout branch network to partner and collaborate with assigned branch teams to strengthen relationships in order to obtain a referral source of business to increase mortgage loan growth.
  • Meets regularly with retail branch team members to communicate mortgage updates, recommendations to identify new opportunities; responds to branch team members in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Conducts interviews and takes applications primarily in-person within the branches through walk-ins and referrals, by phone, and may work other internet applications as assigned.   Works production phone queue as needed.
  • Generates new business, as-needed, by cultivating new or leveraging existing relationships with realtors and builders.
  • Collects necessary documentation and discusses loan alternatives, credit criteria, and interest rates. 
  • Performs follow-up work as necessary to achieve conditional approval within established time frames.
  • Provides consistent and effective communication to inform the applicant of loan pre-approval, issues preventing approval, denial, etc.  Follows up on cancelled and pre-approved applications. 
  • Counsels members regarding money management and financial matters.
  • Completes lending operations in accordance with established Credit Union policies and legal requirements.
  • Coordinates functions with related departments and Branches and provides support as needed. 
  • Attends purchase closing transactions off-site, when time permits, to build relationships with members, Realtors, builders and title companies.
  • Assists Mortgage Department and serves as a backup as needed.
  • Effectively cross-sells credit union products and services by explaining features and benefits.

Essential Preparation and Training:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of mortgage banking experience or relevant lending experience in other roles.
  • For candidates external to the credit union industry, NMLS (Nationwide Multistate Licensing System & Registry) licensure and registration is highly preferred. 
  • FHA lending experience a plus.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective interpersonal skills to represent the credit union positively when dealing with members and colleagues.
  • Strong interviewing, oral and written communication skills.
  • Technologically proficient with systems, standard office software and other tools.
  • Familiarity with secondary mortgage market underwriting, pricing, operations and requirements as well as all consumer lending regulations.
  • Highly self-driven with ability to work well with other people in a team setting. Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time.
  • Solid service orientation -- Actively look for ways to help people solve problems and/or meet financial objectives.
  • Effectively listens for cues and determines members’ needs; courteously resolves member problems by suggesting alternative products and services when applicable. Encourage member referrals.

Working Conditions:

  • Environment generally good, with little discomfort from noise, extreme temperature, dust or other factors.
  • Required to travel throughout the Credit Union’s service area to provide adequate service to members and represent the Credit Union.
  • Exposed to potentially hazardous conditions, such as robbery.  Receives detailed instructions and security procedures on an annual basis to minimize risk
  • Strength Level – Sedentary: exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
